What changed in 2026
- The old pricing was just Individual / Business / Enterprise. GitHub added Free and Pro+ tiers to match Cursor and Windsurf.
- All paid tiers now include agent mode and PR review, features that used to be Enterprise-only.
- Pro got Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3 Pro in the standard picker at no extra cost.
Students and OSS maintainers
GitHub Copilot Pro is free via GitHub Education for verified students and teachers, and free via the Global Maintainers Program for maintainers of popular open-source projects. If you qualify, that’s $120/year saved.
When to upgrade from Pro to Pro+
Only if you specifically need Claude Opus 4.6 inside Copilot. Most developers are fine on Pro’s Sonnet 4.6. If you want Opus plus the broadest model picker, Cursor Pro at $20 is often the better upgrade path.
Annual billing
Copilot Pro annual is $100/year (effective $8.33/month). Business and Enterprise also offer annual discounts — contact GitHub sales for team pricing.

Our Verdict
Best for: GitHub-native developers who value price and PR-review integration over model breadth
Avoid if: You want the strongest agent or broadest model picker (pick Cursor Pro)
