How to Cancel ChatGPT Subscription (2026)

Cancel ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Team from Settings → Subscription → Manage my subscription on chatgpt.com, or through your Apple/Google account if you subscribed via a mobile app store. You keep paid access until the end of the current billing period.

To cancel ChatGPT, go to Settings → Subscription → Manage my subscription on chatgpt.com and select Cancel plan. If you subscribed through the iOS or Android app instead of the website, you have to cancel through your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings — ChatGPT’s own menu can’t touch an App Store or Play Store billing relationship. Either way, you keep paid access until your current billing period ends; there’s no partial refund for the days remaining.

Cancel ChatGPT on the web (chatgpt.com)

  1. Log in at chatgpt.com and click your name or avatar in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Select Settings, then open the Subscription tab.
  3. Click Manage my subscription. This opens OpenAI’s billing portal (Stripe).
  4. Choose Cancel plan and confirm when prompted.
  5. You’ll see a confirmation that your plan will end on your next renewal date — that’s the date access reverts to the free tier.

This works for Plus ($20/mo), Pro ($200/mo), and Go ($5/mo) if you subscribed directly through the OpenAI website.

Cancel ChatGPT on iPhone (App Store billing)

If you subscribed inside the ChatGPT iOS app, OpenAI never touches your card — Apple does. Cancel through Apple, not ChatGPT:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone (not the ChatGPT app).
  2. Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
  3. Find ChatGPT in the list and tap it.
  4. Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

Cancel ChatGPT on Android (Google Play billing)

  1. Open the Google Play Store app.
  2. Tap your profile icon → Payments & subscriptionsSubscriptions.
  3. Select ChatGPT.
  4. Tap Cancel subscription and follow the prompts.

What actually happens after you cancel

  • Access continues through the end of the period you already paid for — you won’t be locked out immediately.
  • Your account stays intact. Conversations, custom GPTs, and settings remain; you’re just downgraded to the free tier (limited GPT-5 access) once the paid period ends.
  • You are not automatically deleted from OpenAI’s systems. If you also want your chat history or account itself removed, that’s a separate step — see our guides on how to delete ChatGPT history and how to delete your ChatGPT account.
  • You can resubscribe anytime at the same or a different tier.

How to confirm your cancellation actually went through

After clicking Cancel plan, check for two things:

  1. An email confirmation from OpenAI acknowledging the cancellation and stating your access end date.
  2. The Subscription tab itself, which should now read something like “Your plan will end on [date]” instead of showing an active renewal date.

If neither shows up, the cancellation likely didn’t process — try again, or check whether you’re logged into the correct account (some people have both a personal ChatGPT login and a separate Team seat through work).

Troubleshooting common cancellation problems

  • “I canceled but got charged again.” This almost always means you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play and canceled on chatgpt.com instead — the website has no control over app-store billing. Cancel again from your phone’s subscription settings.
  • “There’s no cancel button at all.” You’re likely on a Team or Enterprise seat. Only the workspace admin can remove seats or cancel the organization’s plan; ask them directly or check your workspace’s admin console.
  • “I canceled right after renewing.” You still keep access through that full period — canceling early doesn’t forfeit the days you already paid for, and it doesn’t trigger an automatic partial refund either.
  • “I want to cancel but keep some paid features.” Consider ChatGPT Go instead of dropping to fully free — see the downgrade section below.

Downgrade instead of canceling

If price is the actual issue rather than the product itself, ChatGPT Go ($5/mo) is worth a look before you cancel completely — it keeps a slice of paid functionality without dropping to the fully free tier. If you’re canceling because you’re juggling too many AI subscriptions

A common reason people cancel ChatGPT isn’t dissatisfaction — it’s that they’re also paying for Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity and the combined bill adds up. If that’s you, it’s worth comparing a single aggregator like Perspective AI — which bundles GPT-5.2, Claude, Gemini, and 30+ other models, with a no-commitment Pay-As-You-Go option plus subscription tiers from $14.99/mo — against paying for each app separately. Frequently asked questions

How do I cancel my ChatGPT subscription?

Go to chatgpt.com, open Settings → Subscription → Manage my subscription, and select Cancel plan. If you subscribed through the iOS or Android app store instead, you must cancel through your Apple ID or Google Play subscriptions page, not inside ChatGPT.

Will I get a refund if I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

Generally no. OpenAI does not prorate refunds for the current billing period — canceling stops future charges, but you keep Plus features until the period you already paid for ends, then you drop to the free tier.

Why can't I find the cancel button in ChatGPT?

If your account is on a Team or Enterprise plan, only the workspace admin can cancel or remove seats. If you subscribed via the App Store or Google Play, the cancel option lives in your phone's subscription settings, not inside ChatGPT's own menu.

What happens to my chat history after I cancel ChatGPT Plus?

Nothing happens to your history automatically — canceling only stops billing. Your conversations stay in your account under the free tier unless you separately delete them in Settings → Data controls.

Does canceling ChatGPT Plus delete my account?

No. Canceling only removes the paid subscription; your account, saved conversations, and custom GPTs remain. You'd need to take the separate step of deleting your account entirely if you want that too.

Can I downgrade instead of canceling ChatGPT?

Yes. ChatGPT Go ($5/mo) sits between the free tier and Plus ($20/mo) and keeps some paid features at a lower price, so it's worth checking before you cancel outright if cost is the only issue.

How long does it take for a ChatGPT cancellation to take effect?

Cancellation is immediate in the sense that no future charge will occur, but your paid access continues through the end of the billing period you already paid for — there's no partial-month cutoff.
