How to Cancel ChatGPT Subscription (2026)
Cancel ChatGPT Plus, Pro, or Team from Settings → Subscription → Manage my subscription on chatgpt.com, or through your Apple/Google account if you subscribed via a mobile app store. You keep paid access until the end of the current billing period.

To cancel ChatGPT, go to Settings → Subscription → Manage my subscription on chatgpt.com and select Cancel plan. If you subscribed through the iOS or Android app instead of the website, you have to cancel through your Apple ID or Google Play subscription settings — ChatGPT’s own menu can’t touch an App Store or Play Store billing relationship. Either way, you keep paid access until your current billing period ends; there’s no partial refund for the days remaining.
Cancel ChatGPT on the web (chatgpt.com)
- Log in at chatgpt.com and click your name or avatar in the bottom-left corner.
- Select Settings, then open the Subscription tab.
- Click Manage my subscription. This opens OpenAI’s billing portal (Stripe).
- Choose Cancel plan and confirm when prompted.
- You’ll see a confirmation that your plan will end on your next renewal date — that’s the date access reverts to the free tier.
This works for Plus ($20/mo), Pro ($200/mo), and Go ($5/mo) if you subscribed directly through the OpenAI website.
Cancel ChatGPT on iPhone (App Store billing)
If you subscribed inside the ChatGPT iOS app, OpenAI never touches your card — Apple does. Cancel through Apple, not ChatGPT:
- Open Settings on your iPhone (not the ChatGPT app).
- Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
- Find ChatGPT in the list and tap it.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.

What actually happens after you cancel
- Access continues through the end of the period you already paid for — you won’t be locked out immediately.
- Your account stays intact. Conversations, custom GPTs, and settings remain; you’re just downgraded to the free tier (limited GPT-5 access) once the paid period ends.

How to confirm your cancellation actually went through
After clicking Cancel plan, check for two things:
- An email confirmation from OpenAI acknowledging the cancellation and stating your access end date.
- The Subscription tab itself, which should now read something like “Your plan will end on [date]” instead of showing an active renewal date.
If neither shows up, the cancellation likely didn’t process — try again, or check whether you’re logged into the correct account (some people have both a personal ChatGPT login and a separate Team seat through work).

- “I canceled but got charged again.” This almost always means you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play and canceled on chatgpt.com instead — the website has no control over app-store billing. Cancel again from your phone’s subscription settings.
