How to Delete ChatGPT History (Step by Step)

Delete one conversation from the chat sidebar's three-dot menu, or clear everything at once in Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats. Use Temporary Chat if you don't want a conversation saved in the first place.

To delete a single ChatGPT conversation, hover over it in the sidebar, click the three-dot menu, and select Delete. To clear everything at once, go to Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats. If you’d rather nothing be saved in the first place, start a Temporary Chat instead — it never appears in your history.

Delete one conversation

  1. Open the conversation list in the left sidebar.
  2. Hover over the conversation you want to remove.
  3. Click the three-dot (⋯) menu that appears next to it.
  4. Select Delete.
  5. Confirm the deletion.

This removes just that conversation — everything else in your history stays untouched.

Delete all your ChatGPT history at once

  1. Open Settings from your name/avatar in the bottom-left corner.
  2. Go to the Data controls tab.
  3. Select Delete all chats.
  4. Confirm when prompted.

This clears every saved conversation in one step. It does not cancel your subscription or delete your account — see how to cancel ChatGPT and how to delete your ChatGPT account if you want those too.

Stop new chats from being saved: Temporary Chat

If the goal is privacy going forward rather than cleanup of the past, use Temporary Chat:

  • Start a new conversation and toggle Temporary Chat (found on the new-chat screen or model picker).
  • Temporary Chats don’t show up in your history sidebar.
  • They aren’t used to improve OpenAI’s models the way regular chats can be.
  • They still count toward your usage limits for your plan.

History deletion vs. training opt-out vs. account deletion

ActionWhat it doesWhere to find it
Delete one chatRemoves a single conversationSidebar → hover → ⋯ menu → Delete
Delete all chatsRemoves every saved conversationSettings → Data controls → Delete all chats

Turn off model trainingStops future chats from being used to improve OpenAI’s modelsSettings → Data controls → “Improve the model for everyone” toggle

These are independent controls — turning off model training doesn’t delete existing history, and deleting history doesn’t opt you out of training on future chats unless you also flip that toggle.

Should you actually delete your history?

There’s a trade-off worth knowing before you clear everything. ChatGPT (and most AI chatbots) can use recent conversation context and saved memory to give more personalized answers — remembering your writing style, ongoing projects, or preferences across sessions. Deleting history resets that personalization along with any privacy benefit. If you only want to clear a handful of sensitive conversations, deleting individually or using Temporary Chat going forward usually gets you most of the privacy benefit without losing everything.

Managing saved memory separately from chat history

Chat history and saved memory are different systems. Memory is a smaller set of facts ChatGPT explicitly remembers about you (like your job, preferences, or ongoing projects) to personalize future answers, independent of whether the underlying conversations still exist. To review or clear it, go to Settings → Personalization → Manage memory, where you can delete individual memories or clear all of them — separately from deleting your actual chat history.

Deleting history on the ChatGPT mobile app

The mobile experience mirrors the web app:

  1. Open the ChatGPT app and go to the conversation list.
  2. iOS: swipe left on a conversation to reveal a delete option, or tap and hold for a menu.
  3. Android: tap and hold a conversation to select it, then tap the delete/trash icon.
  4. To clear everything at once, go to Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats, same as on the web.

What OpenAI actually keeps after you delete a chat

Deleting a conversation removes it from your account view immediately. OpenAI’s data-control documentation notes that deleted conversations may persist briefly in backend systems — generally for a limited period — unless there’s a legal, safety, or fraud-prevention reason to retain them longer. If you need guaranteed, immediate erasure for compliance reasons, check OpenAI’s current privacy policy directly rather than relying on defaults.

Some people do a history cleanup right before switching tools rather than staying with one provider by default. If you’re evaluating alternatives anyway, an all-in-one aggregator like Perspective AI gives you access to GPT-5.2, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek — with a no-commitment Pay-As-You-Go option or subscriptions from $14.99/mo — instead of committing to one provider’s ecosystem.

Frequently asked questions

How do I delete a single ChatGPT conversation?

Hover over the conversation in the left sidebar, click the three-dot menu that appears, and select Delete. Confirm when prompted. This removes just that one conversation, not your whole history.

How do I delete all my ChatGPT chat history at once?

Go to Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats. This removes every saved conversation from your account in one action, but does not delete your account or cancel your subscription.

How do I stop ChatGPT from saving my conversations in the first place?

Use Temporary Chat, available from the new-chat screen or the model picker. Temporary Chats don't appear in your history sidebar and aren't used to improve OpenAI's models.

Does deleting ChatGPT history stop OpenAI from training on my data?

Not automatically. Deleting a conversation removes it from your visible history, but whether past conversations were used for model training is controlled separately by the 'Improve the model for everyone' toggle in Settings → Data controls.

Is deleted ChatGPT history really gone immediately?

It disappears from your account view right away, but OpenAI's data-control documentation notes that deleted conversations may be retained briefly on the backend — typically for a limited window — unless there's a legal reason to keep them longer.

Can I delete ChatGPT history on the mobile app?

Yes. The steps are the same as the web version — swipe or long-press a conversation to delete it individually, or go to Settings → Data controls → Delete all chats to clear everything.

Will deleting my ChatGPT history affect my custom GPTs or memory?

Deleting chat history removes conversations, not custom GPTs you've built or saved memory entries. Those are managed separately under Settings → Personalization → Manage memory.
